Giuliana Cunéaz’s research, a 20-year long inquiry, is collected in the new monograph edited by Giovanni Iovane, James Putnam, and Sergio Risaliti, published by Silvana Editoriale. The book offers extensive critical reflection on her work, ranging from the essay by Gillo Dorfles to those of Piero Gilardi, Sabrina Zannier, Alberto Fiz, and Laura Cherubini.

The monograph includes a companion DVD, produced especially for the exhibition The Growing Garden, held at the Gagliardi Art System gallery in Turin.

This first monograph on Giuliana Giuliana Cunéaz  reveals the output of one of the most original contemporary woman artists, an itinerary that coherently developed starting from the end of the Eighties until today. After obtaining a diploma at the Fine Art Academy of Turin, she immediately started to conceive of the work of art as a multitude within a metamorphic process. This aspect immediately met with Gillo Dorfles’ appreciation. In 1983, he described her work as “heralding a new, for the most part unprecedented, awareness about the destiny of the visual arts today, and perhaps also in the near future”. An internationally acknowledged artist (she exhibited, among others, at the Sao Paulo Biennial in Brazil, and was also widely acknowledged in France and Germany), Giuliana Cunéaz’s art ranges from video to sculpture, from photography to video installations, right up to her recent painted screens – her firm belief being that, no matter the media they use, artists have to find new visual paths, exploring the hidden aspect of physical and natural existence within an itinerary that leads to surpise and amazement. Her research has developed along major cycles. From Corpo Immaginato [Imagined Body] through her works on Trance and the Spazi Nomadi [Nomad Spaces], she finally came to Occulta Naturae, [The Secrets of Nature], where 3D animation and nanoscience are seen as the tools of an epistemic inquiry that allows to capture the identity of seemingly different elements. Thus, if in the Nineties she traced the relationship between human and vegetable forms, creating works of great emotional impact, such as Le Vergini (1993), Biancaneve (Snow White, 1995), and Corpus in Fabula (1995), now she uses an entirely innovative research to capture the unchanging elements in an imaginary landscape, which she navigates through fractals and neurons. Giuliana Cunéaz continues to ask herself questions on the laws of physics, on the basis of a research that pushes to the boundaries of consciousness. Over 80 works are presented in this volume, rich in critical documents, accurately analyzing the inquiry of an artist who has yet to be discovered, and who never ceases to wonder about the destiny of mankind.
